Red Flags and Warning Bells

I just had this "Murano Cockatoo Fenincio" returned to me, because it received some damage in shipping. This is a $500.00 piece and I am really having some problems with the transaction. All the E-Mails I received before the purchase were only concerned with the return policy. The bells and whistles kept going off in my head, but I did end up going through with the deal. The buyer was never concerned about the bird itself, only the return if it was damaged. The situation as it stands now, I have the bird back, and have refunded the purchase price. Now, I am doing the insurance thing with UPS. I am going to trust my instincts from this day forward. I really think that I have been had. Maybe, I am just being paranoid, but I don't feel like that is the case. I have a strange feeling that the buyer was looking for a replacement for a broken one and how can you go wrong this way. I can't prove my thoughts on the subject, I just felt like something wasn't right from the get-go. It is safe to say that I have been awakened and I will trust my gut from now forward.
The packing came into the issue and I do not think it could have been packed any safer. The bird itself was inside a separate box inside another larger box with a full 2" of padding (foam) encircling the lesser box. I believe myself, I could have thrown the package against a wall and not damaged the item. Selling online has its drawbacks, I just wish it would have been with a less costly item.
